About Me

159a1935Originally from Newcastle, I moved to York in 1987.  I began my counselling training in 1999, completing a Graduate Diploma in Counselling in 2003 at the University of York St John.

I have 13 years post-qualified experience of working as a counsellor within the voluntary sector and 4 years experience prior to being qualified working in a support capacity for a variety of voluntary agencies – Age Concern, York Rape Crisis, York Women’s Counselling Service and Victim Support .

I have 10 years experience of working for a generic counselling service which offered short to mid-term counselling, most of which took place in doctors surgeries.

I also worked as part of a specialised service which offered mid/longer term counselling and EMDR to adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse.

In 2009 I completed a Diploma in Individual and Group Supervision.  In 2013 I became a BACP Senior Accredited Supervisor of Individuals.

I am a Senior Accredited member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and a UKRCP (United Kingdom Register of Counsellors/Psychotherapists) Registered Independent Counsellor, adhering to the BACP ethical framework.

I would describe my approach as integrative/humanistic. I enjoy integrating aspects of various approaches into my work e.g. Psychodynamic/Attachment Theory, EMDR, Transactional Analysis, Mindfulness, Solution Focused Therapy etc.

I also have a certificate in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for clients who prefer to work in a more structured way.

I am committed to on-going self-development and have taken part in a wide range of training (see my Training page for details) to enhance my work with clients e.g.I have always had an interest in working with anxiety, trauma and post traumatic stress disorder. With this in mind, I decided to broaden my skills and became a qualified Eye Movement Desensitising and Reprocessing therapist in 2008,  achieving Accreditation status with EMDR Europe in January 2012 (see my EMDR page for further details.)

Over the years I have become more and more aware of the  dangerous effects stress can have on our lives (see my page on stress.)  I have completed training which enables me to work with my clients to help them to lessen stress and to develop strategies to manage it much more effectively.

Five years ago I decided to begin running  a small private business from my home in York.  I have built this up over the years and I now work Monday to Thursday from a comfortable, confidential counselling room (daytime and evening appointments available.)

If you are coming by car, there is plenty of free parking available just outside. If you are planning on using public transport, the Rawcliffe Park and Ride is just a few minutes walk away. York station is just two minutes walk from the Park and Ride bus stop.
